A Selection From Our Favorite Videos

This a great work of interactive video art installation created by Calli Higgins that really creates the emotional ups and downs of the changing seasons. The installation was actually originally designed for IAC’s 120′ video wall, which makes it that much sweeter as an Indiewalls feature. We hope you like it as much as we do.

Art Quote Mondays (inspiration for a tough day of the week)

A great quote we found in The Huffington Post this week.

“When I grow up I would like to be an artist in France. The reason is because I like to draw. I would get my money from the pictures I would sell. I hope I will be one.”

 - Keith Haring (In Elementary School)

Featured Art of the Week

This is a piece commissioned by The Refinery Hotel from Diana Delgado, an artist with a passion and great taste in naming art.

We are proud to work with Diana and never stop being amazed at what she can create.

This is an incredible video on the thought and production process of Motoi Yamamoto. His attention to detail working with salt is astounding.

Check out this video of the installation that Indiewalls put together at the VEVO control room. The participating artists are James Rizzi and AVone. We are proud to have had the opportunity to work alongside these artists to bring VEVO, Dream Downtown, HGTV, Miller Light and “The Internship” an incredible art program.

Also, be sure to check out AVone’s art on display at Dream Downtown, a hotel that is on the forefront of the emerging art scene.

Anthony Boone Converts Train Debris into Art at The Renaissance Newark Hotel

As part of its local RLife LIVE series, Renaissance Newark Hotel is introducing Anthony Boone for its second exhibition. Encouraging guests and the local community to take time to enjoy some of the best talent in the Newark NJ emerging art scene is very much a part of the Renaissance philosophy. Indiewalls is excited to partner with Renaissance to bring truly local talent to the hotel and not only enhance the aesthetic experience but bring some of the surrounding culture in as well.

Anthony Boone's work at Renaissance Newark Hotel

Since becoming a professional artist in 2005, Anthony E. Boone’s career has skyrocketed beyond his wildest dreams. Self taught and proud of it, Boone’s explosions of color and texture bring to mind the work of influential abstract expressionist, Jackson Pollock — an artist he highly respects. “He was so raw,” explains Boone. Like Pollock, Boone also channels intense passion into his painting.

"Anime", "Corpuscle" and "Through Your Eyes"

In addition to works on paper Boone also has a collection of sculpture work. As a freight conductor for over 20 years, Anthony has worked and traveled to many rail yards throughout New Jersey. Recently, he found an early 20th century fishplate, a bar that holds the track together, at the Center St. branch track in Harrison, NJ. After halting the train and collecting the plate, Anthony became fascinated with its worn shape and condition. He continued to collect unique pieces of metal throughout his travels and created a collection of sculptures entitled “In My Travels” in which he embellishes each piece with paint in unique and eye catching styles.

Boone credits his seamstress mother Patricia A. Boone for his artistic instincts. His motivation to keep painting and sculpting comes from his father, contractor James E. Boone, who always showed him the before and after of a project.

"It Works" by Anthony Boone

After hotel guests check-in they are warmly greeted by seven of Boone’s pieces. To the left, they’ll see thick acrylic works which literally climb off the canvas. And to their right they will be surprised to note that as the saying goes things aren’t always as they seem.

Indiewalls at SxSW

Indiewalls/VEVO Partnership

Music media giant VEVO partnered with Dream Hotels for SXSW 2013. VEVO, as part of the launch of the new VEVO TV, took over an entire building on 4th street between Lavaca and Guadalupe, in the heart of Austin. The space was completely transformed to mimic a ‘downtown loft.’As part of this transformation, VEVO and Dream tapped Indiewalls to curate a collection of artwork for the space. Instead of thinking about the artwork as merely decoration in the VEVO loft, Indiewalls saw the opportunity to use the loft as exhibition space for one of New York’s best-known street artist, AVone.

Guests at the VEVO events and parties were surprised not just to see great artwork, but were also able to buy great artwork. As is always the case with an Indiewalls exhibition, passer-bys were able to scan QR codes beneath the artwork, and submit a payment directly from their phones.

Indiewalls also collaborated with Dallas-based artist JMR to paint a massive mural on the side of the VEVO building. JMR painted alongside legendary muralist Shepard Fairey, who was painting a rock-and-roll inspired mural of his own.

Indiewalls/HGTV “Art on the Side” campaign

Indiewalls partnered with HGTV to help spread the home design network’s #LoveHome campaign. HGTV commissioned the creation of large scale murals in two historic locations in downtown Austin. For these projects,  Indiewalls brought in Dallas-based, Brooklyn native JMR, whose unique mixture of neo-abstract expressionism combined with hints of contemporary pop made him a perfect fit for the HGTV campaign.

The first set of murals were painted on the building at the corner of 3rd and Trinity – directly across from the Austin Convention Center. The second set of murals were painted on the massive walls of the legendary Austin Music Hall. Indiewalls, and our collaborating artist, were proud to have (legally) left our mark on these historic landmarks.

Indiewalls/Miller Lite Custom-designed ‘Step and Repeat’

Miller Lite, the official SXSW beer sponsor promoted its partnership with Fox Pictures “The Internship” at SXSW. Miller Lite commissioned Indiewalls and artist AVone to create a custom 8ft x 8ft painting as the backdrop for a very special announcement they made at this event. Inspired by the film, Miller Lite is going to give four friends the experience of a lifetime: A two-week Miller Time “Internship” that will take them across the country for a series of special Miller Lite events. The event was filled with celebrities, a never-before-seen trailer from the movie and of course, great beer.

A Guide to Gifting Art: How to buy art for that special someone

How is it almost the end of January? The Christmas trees and menorahs have officially come down, but don’t worry—there’s more festive décor coming to a store near you! Valentine’s Day is almost upon us, and sightings of heart-adorned window displays have already been reported. If you’re wondering what to get your significant other, it’s hard to think of a better present than a one-of-a-kind artwork. Buying art for your loved one suggests so many great things about you, the gift giver: sensitivity, curiosity, commitment, and the fact that you totally get your partner’s aesthetic taste.

Love the idea but don’t know where to start? Here are some quick tips courtesy of Indiewalls on how to approach buying art as a gift:

Consider Style

This seems pretty obvious, but some people can miss the mark pretty widely when it comes to art giving.  The easiest way to get a sense of someone’s style is to consider their home décor. Does she surprise you with bright accents of color in unexpected places? Relics from favorite trips on his bookshelves? A minimalist duvet cover on the bed? Sentimental tchotchkes littering the apartment? Start with that. Think about the design decisions that went into the focal points of the space—the sofa, bed, workspace, even the kitchen. What mood was your partner trying to convey? Do these choices resonate with a certain time period or artistic style? Consider what shared characteristics are evident in the things your SO likes to look at.

How does your partner's space express personal style?

Follow Inspiration

Does your significant other have a serious case of wanderlust? Architectural or landscape photography might (temporarily) soothe that adventurous spirit. If she’s a history buff, she may appreciate a retro print or a painting inspired by a historical event? Maybe he’s interested in activism, in which case portraits of inspirational figures might be a good choice.  Try to consider not only what your SO likes, but what moves her.

Who or what inspires your significant other?

Convey Meaning

Link what you want to say with this gift (“I love you” or “Ur hot”?) with the meaning of the artwork. Maybe that painting titled “Tomorrow’s Dystopia” isn’t the best way to say it. Don’t just consider how a piece of art will look in your partner’s personal environment; try to imagine how living with that work will affect and enhance his or her everyday life. Remember–you’ll be associated with any of the feelings the work evokes.

Say it with art.

What other principles should you follow when buying someone art? Let us know in the comments below!

Later this week we’ll return with the Indiewalls Valentine’s Day Gift Guide, with examples of works from our collection to inspire love, lust, and affection for various styles and personalities.
